Difference Between Barrage and Dam, Largest dam in world and in India.

Difference between Barrage and Dam

Barrage:-Barrage is may be define as the water reservoir it is used to regulate the water in different heights. The barrage is a type of dam or a deep water reservoir. A barrage is a type of low head diversion dam which consist of number of large gates that can be opened or closed to control the amount of water passing through. This allows the structure to regulate the river water at different heights by the gates.
Barrage is a dam placed in water course to increase the depth of water or to divert it into a channel for navigation or irrigation. Barrage is an artificial barrier across a river or estuary to prevent flooding, aid irrigation or navigation, or to generate electricity by tidal power.

Barrage is made across the river to store the water and to divert the water to the head race tunnels to generate the electricity by water, or can be used for the irrigation purpose and can be used for the other purpose.

Dam:-A dam is type of barrier that stops or restricts the flow of water and make it stored. The dams creates a deep water reservoir in the river to store the large amount of water in the dam. The stored water in the dam can be used for activities such as irrigation, human consumption, industrial use, aquaculture and hydropower. Hydropower is used to generate the electricity for different uses.
The world’s first dam was built in Jordan, dating to 3000 BC, the earliest dam is known as Jawa Dam.

The world’s largest dam is the Three Gorges Dam. The Three Gorges Dam is a hydroelectric gravity dam that spans the Yangtze river by the town of Sandopuing, China. The Three Gorges Dam is the world’s largest dam to produce the largest power station. It produces the 22,500MW (Mega Watt) energy. The dam generates 98.8TWh (Terawatt-hour) energy. The construction cost of three Gorges Dam is ¥203 billion (US $31.765billion). The gorges dam is made on the Yangtze River, the height of the dam is 181m and length of this dam is 2335m. It is a conventional type of dam. The no. of turbines used across the dam 32X700MW and 2X50MW Francis-type turbines are used to generate the electricity.

India’s Largest dam is the Tehri Dam. Tehri Dam on Bhagirathi river is the biggest, highest and tallest dam in India and also the eighth highest dam in the world, located at Uttarakhand. This dam is made on the Bhagirathi river.
